The St. Lucia Blind Welfare Association was represented by President Glen Simon and Executive Director Anthony Avril at the World Blind Union (WBU) North American/Caribbean Regional Meeting in Trinidad and Tobago held on Friday May 31st 2019.
The meeting took place at the School for the Bind in Santa Cruz and was hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association (TTBWA).
The feature address at the opening ceremony was delivered by Hon. Jennifer Baptiste-Primus, Minister for Labour and Small Enterprises on behalf of the Prime Minister. She stated that her government fully supports the rights of all persons especially persons with disabilities including access to health services, employment, education and supportive infrastructure to occupational health and safety issues.
President of the WBU, Dr. Frederic Schroeder acknowledged that the success of the WBU was due to the efforts of the collective while proudly announcing the addition of the six new members of the WBU. The new members are St. Lucia, Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica, Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago who became a member in November of 2018.
President of the TTBWA, Felix Cazeo passionately indicated that blind people don't want to be treated like they have mental disability issues. They are capable of entering into contracts with a bank, they have physical needs like any other person; they what to have and raise a family of their own and have access to sexual and reproductive health information and education and need to be included at all levels of society.
The WBU is the main advocacy body for blind and visually impaired person around the world and believe no one should be left behind. The organization works to improve the lives of person with disabilities while strengthening the organization that support blind persons in all part of the world.
As shocking as this statement may seem, its essence is bold and true. Let us face it. None of us hold....
